Facebook Passes Wikipedia to Become Fourth Largest Site in the World

Posted by Dan Malachowski, Product Marketing Manager

In June 2009, Facebook gained another 24 million unique visitors (comScore), pushing its total unique visitors to 340 million.  This 150+% year over year growth has now pushed Facebook ahead of Wikipedia as the fourth largest Web site in the world.  The only sites that are bigger than Facebook internationally are #1 Google, #2 Microsoft, and #3 Yahoo!

Facebook still has a way to go to reach Yahoo! (581 million visitors in June).  However, Facebook’s remarkable growth rate makes catching up possible.  In the last year and a half, Facebook has passed MySpace, Amazon, CBS, eBay, AOL, and now Wikipedia.

In the US, Facebook remains the sixth largest site behind Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, AOL, and FOX.
