As of 10:00 this morning, the #2 hottest keyword on Google, according to Google Trends, was “Sarah Palin speech video.”  As with most online video, including recent Olympic video, this begs the question: Can search engine users find the latest, most relevant video they’re looking for?  With the help of the Huffington Post and the Guardian Unlimited, the major search engines were prepared to deliver Palin’s RNC speech video to hungry searchers first thing this morning.

On Google, the video ranked #1 in the natural results.  It’s not an embedded result, but the clear title tag “Sarah Palin RNC Convention Speech (VIDEO) (TEXT)” from the Huffington Post leads searchers directly to a page that houses the video they’re looking for.  Four of the first 10 natural search results for the keyword “Sarah Palin speech video” lead directly to the RNC video, including 2 blog results on the bottom of the SERP:

On Yahoo!, the #2 result from rightpundits.com shows the Palin RNC speech I’m looking for.  The rest of the top 10 results that link to videos, including the embedded YouTube result, lead me to Palin’s acceptance speech in Ohio from last week (which I’m not currently interested in).  However, the #2 news result (on top of the Yahoo! SERP) is labeled as “video” and leads me directly to the RNC video on the Guardian Unlimited site:

The engines, especially Google, have done a good job of indexing and ranking the Palin RNC video quickly.  Since the popular “Sarah Palin speech video” query doesn’t specify the RNC speech, but searchers are obviously looking for that speech, this is a great illustration of why freshness of content should (and does) help natural search ranking.
