How influential are you? Google’s trying to sum it up. A BusinessWeek article Making Social Networks Profitable: Google’s new approach could offer advertisers coveted online communities says Google is working on a patent-pending methodology and tracking system for ranking “influencers” on social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook.  It aims to be the PageRank for social networking sites.

What could this mean for advertisers?  If it works, advertisers could see increased targeting capabilities for social network ad buying and premium pricing for serving ads at key influencers (the highly social participants) in social networking sites. As this story unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Google defines a social “influencer.”
