UK Social Media Under-16s Ban

What’s Happened

The UK has announced a full ban on social media for under-16s across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Facebook and X.

Legislation is expected to pass by end of 2026, with rollout from Spring 2027.

Beyond access, the policy removes under-16s from core platforms and restricts “addictive” design features — livestreaming, contact with unknown users, infinite scroll and autoplay.

Messaging services (WhatsApp, Signal) are excluded.

Why is the UK doing this now?

Part of a global regulatory shift toward age-gating social media:

• Australia: first nationwide under-16 ban (Dec 2025)

• Indonesia enforced similar restrictions in 2026

• Malaysia: ban launched June 2026 with age verification

• France, Denmark, Greece, Poland, Canada: similar legislation in progress

In Australia, early data suggests some positive behavioural changes, however restrictions can be circumvented or younger audiences migrate to less regulated environments—such as private messaging, gaming ecosystems etc.
