Google Announces New Search Generative Experience (SGE)

At Googleā€™s I/O on May 10th, 2023, Google announced its new AI-powered Search Engine named the Google Search Generative Experience (SGE, for short). The new SGE incorporates an updated interface that can display an AI-generated answer to a userā€™s query above the SERP, the option to have a conversation with a Google AI bot to ask follow up questions for your search and more. There is currently no timetable on when SGE will replace the current experience, but you can test it out for yourself by joining the Google Labs waitlist.

New Google Search ā€œPerspectivesā€ Launching with SGE

Google also announced new features to the current SERP experience, including ā€œPerspectivesā€. Perspectives allows users to filter their search results to see content from videos, blogs, and forums. When utilizing this feature, youā€™ll also be shown more details about the creators of the content that youā€™re seeing, such as their name, profile photo, or information about the popularity of their content.

Bard Updates

Another Google announcement from I/O was for updates to Google Bard. The update includes Bard now being available in over 180 countries, a more visual interface, support for Google Lens, and Google Maps and Google Lens integration.

New Core Web Vital Metric (INP)

Google announced that starting in March 2024 the current Core Web Vital Metric, First Input Delay (FID), will be replaced with a new metric called Next Paint (INP). INP will measure the responsiveness of a webpage by observing the latency of user interactions with a page and reporting a single value.

New Bing Now Available for Everyone 

Bing’s new chat feature, ā€˜Bing Chatā€™ is now available to all users who have Microsoft Edge downloaded. Bing has removed its waitlist from the site and is now available as long as you are using Edge or the Bing app. Bing Now also has some updates made to it such as more visually appealing answers to questions in Bing Chat,  chat history, the ability to share and export chats, and much more.

Google opens access to Search Generative Experience (SGE) today

Google has begun to grant access to those who were on the waitlist for the new Search Generative Experience. Accepted users will receive emails letting them know that they can begin using the feature.

Google Updates Helpful Content System Algorithm

Google has announced a new update to the Helpful Content System in the next couple of months. Some new things added to this algorithm will be, an improvement on how rank results in search, an emphasis on promoting more helpful websites made for humans, and more.

Microsoft Announces Mobile Enhancements for Bing & Edge

Microsoft has announced some mobile enhancements that are coming to Bing & Edge. Updates coming to Bing Chat will include chat history, audibly being able to ask questions and more. On the Edge app, you will be able to ask Bing to summarize what the content means on the page, and even to follow up with questions about the content on the page. Updates will also be added to SwiftKey and Skype.

Neeva Shuts Down Search Engine

Neeva, an ad-free search engine, announced it will shut down on June 2nd. The search engine was founded in 2019 and launched in 2021. The search engine shut down due to a lack of users using the search engine.
